IP-PBX

The PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is a Telephony Server that connects devices, eg Phone, Fax or Answering Machine with each other but also with one or more lines of the public telephone network.

Thanks to the spread of IT-based communication networks classical IT and TC are interconnected such that development moves further and further towards purely softwarebased systems.
This way today's TC-systems don't need proprietary solutions any more but can instead be run on standard servers. For the connection to the phones or the exchange connection usually SIP standard (VoIP) is used, while exchange connections or the connection of analog terminals is usually done over VoiP gateways.
